  • Giant Reese’s Cup Cake

    Giant Reese’s Cup Cake

Chocolate and Peanut Butter. Amazing. Delicious. Perfect. This classic combination has stood the test of time and is immortalized in the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. But sometimes, I just want to eat cake… but also Reese’s peanut butter cups. So I made a cake. It’s not like this hasn’t been done before, because it definitely has. But this one is mine, and I’m obsessed with the flavor, texture and deliciousness of it all.

(but it’s super annoying to make)

I shouldn’t be saying that about my own recipe, but I won’t lie to you, it’s annoying. Since there is no actual baking involved, there is instead a lot of refrigerator time. Every time you do a layer, the cake sits in the fridge for 30 minutes before you can do the next one. That’s the worst part about this cake. But if you have 2 free hours and feel like tackling it, then I would recommend it, because it’s like a whole lot of peanut butter cups that you can eat like a cake.

So come have some cake that’s more like candy as we are only TWO days away from Halloween!

  • Halloween 2018 Premier!

    Halloween 2018 Premier!

If you’re a fan of horror, then you know that Halloween 2018 comes out today. I only know because I made this fun dessert for the premier. I hate horror movies, they actually scare me. Although, I should be more specific. I don’t mind the blood and violence, it’s more about the creepy music. But enough about me.

In order to honor the legacy of Michael Myers, I decided to stab some dessert, and have my own murder spree… with the only victims being cake. Angels food cake, coated in dark chocolate glaze, stuffed with red icing, and stabbed with tiny icing cleavers (that I bought at Michael’s).

I hope you guys enjoy the movie, and maybe stab some cakes of your own!

  • Color Schemes: Do I Need One?

Color Schemes: Do I Need One?

So you need a color scheme. You’re throwing a party of any kind… a wedding, a bar or bat mitzvah, a 16 sixteen or a bachelorette party. Some of those might not need as much planning as a wedding, but a color scheme will make all of your decorating needs that much easier.

Let’s talk about colors real quick. When it comes down to it, whatever colors you like and put together is your decision. If you like it, that’s all you really need.

But in case you want to create a flowing color scheme that matches the theme of your party, keep reading.

My aunt got married on Labor Day this past year. She was so excited but we basically had 3 months to actually get some of the major details straight. For one, a color scheme needed to be decided on. Her “theme” was rustic chic and was held outside at a gorgeous venue. Mason jars were used as drinking glasses, and the food was kosher BBQ (sounds interesting, right? It was.) Linens, flowers and just accent accessories needed to be chosen and ordered, but my aunt didn’t know how to go about picking a palette or even where to start looking. So I created a variety of palettes for her to get even a beginning of an idea.

Some color inspiration for the Fall

So where do you go to find an idea for a color palette? Well, I went to one of my favorite apps, pinterest. Now, there is definitely a trend of brides going to pinterest to look for ideas, and I have to tell you, it’s not a bad idea to go and look, and for color schemes, it’s a gold mine. Many wedding inspo sites have color swatches, little colorful circles giving you the perfect picture to show your event planner, or take with you to a rental store.

Listen, I can’t tell you what to do for your events or what colors you should use. If you decide 4 shades of pink is what you need, go for it. It’s your event so it’s your decision. But I’m going to give you a resource. Visit our pinterest board, color schemes, to find your next color inspiration!

  • Make It Spooky: Decorating for Halloween

Make It Spooky: Decorating for Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner and we have to talk about a very important part of it. Decorating. Every year, thousands of people go all out and create masterpieces out of their homes to celebrate the holiday. Lights, blowups, animatronics… the possibilities are endless thanks to stores like Spirit Halloween.

Growing up we always had some sort of decoration, although it was generally a purple light up spider web complete with spider, an old animatronic ghost that vibrated and made noise when you passed its infrared sensor, and gauzy spider webs all over the bushes. Oh, and my mom would answer the door in a witch’s hat. This was all before blow-ups and talking skulls and crazy light shows set to music became a thing. But then we moved, and everything changed in the décor department.

In order to really get into the mind of someone who enjoys celebrating and decorating for Halloween, I spoke to someone I know very well who takes great pride in making our house stand out for Halloween and in turn, receives 1200-1500 kids and parents as trick or treaters every year; my brother Noah.

OMB: Where are the best places to buy Halloween decorations… in your opinion?

Noah: Spirit Halloween is the best place, they have the best shit. Unless you shop online, you can’t find stuff like Spirit Halloween has. Unless you’re looking specifically for lights, then I definitely suggest target.

OMB: So, what’s the most important thing to consider when decorating for Halloween?

Noah: Lights. You really have to consider the placement, the colors you choose, and whether it looks good or natural. Lights create the ambiance and reduce the need for brighter lights, such as flashlights which negate the point of having scary decorations.

OMB: What is your favorite Halloween decoration?

Noah: A fog machine. If you put it in the right place, you don’t need anything else. You can scare people and create the right environment just by turning it on.

OMB: What advice would you give to those who want to know how to decorate their home?

Noah: Be smart about what you buy. A little goes a long way, and it’s more about trying to scare people than anything else for me at least.

  • Caramel Pecan Cinnamon Rolls

    Caramel Pecan Cinnamon Rolls

We all have a memory of cinnamon rolls. Most of the time, the memory starts with popping a can of Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls, baking them and then squeezing that glorious white sugary glaze and watching it melt into those gooey delicious rolls.

My cinnamon rolls are not that. They combine pecans and salted caramel and the rolls bake with the topping already on it and upside down. Sounds… different, doesn’t it. Different is good. These cinnamon rolls are gooey, butter, sweet and tender. When you pull them apart, the aroma of cinnamon drenched in caramel hits you, and it’s the most intoxicating scent.

Paired with a cup of coffee on a rainy Saturday morning… you’ll feel warm and full, like something has been missing from your routine. The worries will fade away as you melt into the warm embrace of cinnamon and butter.

If you want these cinnamon rolls in you life, find the recipe here.

  • Venom: Movie Premier

    Venom: Movie Premier

It’s October 5th, and if you’re into Marvel or Superheros, you know what came out today. Venom is a highly anticipated movie starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom. As a nerd myself, I am so excited to see this movie and watch one of my favorite villains come to life on screen.

So for the premier, we decided to make a Venom cake based on the movie poster. I (Zoe) am not a master baker, nor have I ever made a mirror glaze or worked with fondant. While I am really good at making tasty cakes, the rest of it was all new, and it was all worth it to complete this cake to celebrate Tom Hardy and Venom (I really like Tom Hardy as an actor).

Well, we’re off to go see the movie now, and when we come back, we have some tasty cake to eat!

  • Maple Cayenne Butter

    Maple Cayenne Butter

When I think about the fall, I think about sweaters, leggings, boots, crunchy leaves, and warm fulfilling food that makes me feel like the cooling weather is happening just for me. One of my biggest fall things is not something you’d expect.

Pancakes. I think pancakes are great all year round, but with the addition of fresh maple syrup, I just immediately associate pancakes with the fall. But now, I have one upped my own pancakes with the addition of this amazing compound butter. I softened butter and added maple syrup and cayenne pepper. The ingredients were mashed together and then formed into a log with a piece of saran wrap and then cooled in the refrigerator. It’s so easy to make and you don’t even need any special tools!

I won’t lie, I wanted to eat the butter plain. It’s that good.

But other than pancakes, there are so many fun applications for this butter! Pancakes are just one. French toast, waffles, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, popcorn… the possibilities are basically endless.

I used this butter to make more than a few things after I made it, but my favorite was poutine. Poutine is traditionally a Canadian dish, originating in Quebec. Typically, it consists of fries and cheese curds, covered in delicious brown gravy. It’s actually the best hangover food I’ve ever come across, as well as an amazing anytime I feel like food. So where did I use the maple cayenne butter? The brown gravy is based in a roux (butter and flour cooked together to create a base for a thick sauce), and the compound butter gave the whole sauce this sweetness backed by the sharpness of cayenne.

While I haven’t linked the recipe for my poutine to this article, with enough interest, I will post it at a later time. In the meanwhile, please please please enjoy the hell out of this butter and use it for everything.

  • Autumn Toddy

    Autumn Toddy

As the weather begins to cool off, (since it’s autumn in New England) we begin to look for food and drink that will warm us and make us feel like Fall has finally arrived. With pumpkin spice lattes being all the rage, we wanted to bring you something a little different for National Coffee Day, as well as a little more refined.

Omit the bourbon or whiskey if you’re not allowed to drink yet, but the effect is still the same. A warm calming drink that evokes the flavors of fall many of us look for.

    Fine the recipe here.

  • Happy National Chocolate Milk Day!

    Happy National Chocolate Milk Day!

Today is September 27th. It’s National Chocolate Milk Day!

Why is this important? Let me tell you…

I love chocolate milk. In elementary school I drank it 3 times a day, and that continued, although not at that frequency still today. For me, it’s pretty perfect the way it is. But with anything in the culinary world, something can always be made better. The chocolate milk I drink now is different than the one that I drank as a child.

That milk was always skim, with Hershey’s chocolate syrup. These days, I either use 1% or 2% milk and I use Hershey’s dark chocolate syrup now, as it’s way more my aesthetic than the regular chocolate syrup. Plus, it’s not nearly as sweet. But still, this is pretty basic as far as chocolate milk goes. So let me give you some new ideas.

For your basis yet still slightly jazzed up, take my basic morning chocolate milk.

    Zoe’s Morning Chocolate Milk

    Yield: 1 Serving

    -1 cup 2% Milk

-1 TBSP Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Syrup

Pour milk into your cup of choice, add syrup, and stir with a spoon. ENJOY.

    *Recipe pictured is doubled

For your normal chocolate milk lover, this would probably be enough. It’s interesting enough and just slightly different from the chocolate milk you’d get at any restaurant or elementary school to make most people say, “Oh that’s good!” But let’s go bigger. Go big or go home, right?

In recent years, the idea of mixing salt and chocolate took off. Every chocolate came in milk, dark, white and salted. So let’s make Salted Chocolate Milk. If it works with a chocolate bar, a cupcake and a brownie, why not with chocolate milk? If I’m being honest with myself, and I always am, just adding some salt is not enough for me. So I’m going to amp that idea up a little more. What if… I took the idea of salted chocolate and added in two more elements? As a chef, I always enjoy adding a little extra to something in order to make it that much more complex.

So today I made Salted Caramel Dark Chocolate Pretzel Milk.

I’ve never made this before mind you, so this was an experiment!

Salted Caramel Dark Chocolate Pretzel Milk

    Yield: 1 serving

-Caramel Sauce (Garnish, use on the inside of the glass)

-2 TBSP Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Syrup

    -1 Cup Milk

    -1 TSP Brown Sugar

    -1/2 TSP Sea Salt

    -Salted Pretzels (Garnish, as needed)

    -Whipped Cream (Garnish if desired)

Mix chocolate syrup into the milk. Add the brown sugar and continue stirring until dissolved. Add in the sea salt and stir a few times until fully combined. Top with caramel sauce (just a single swirl is fine) and garnish with a pretzel rod or whatever shaped pretzel you prefer.

    *The recipe pictured is doubled

Oh! If the idea of drinking chocolate milk (and having all that sugar) scares you, consider this. Chocolate milk functions extremely well as a post-workout or post lifting drink. While you can go out and buy premade drink mixes filled with electrolytes. Chocolate milk contains healthy fats, a variety of enzymes and naturally occurring electrolytes, which can speed your recovery and make you feel better after a workout. Now, I always drink chocolate milk after a workout, but that’s mostly because I just like it, and I wouldn’t recommend the more… unique chocolate milk recipe I am including in this article.

My final note about chocolate milk is if you’re over 21, and you want to make your chocolate milk more adult, add some Bailey’s Irish Cream, Amaretto or RumChata to your wonderful chocolate drink. Personally, it’s not my thing, I like the purity of a simple chocolate milk, but seriously, feel free, I’m sure it’s delicious. Some other additions to chocolate milk that you might want to try are:

    -Cinnamon

    -Cayenne Pepper

    -Chile Peppers

    -Coconut Cream

    -Vanilla or Almond Extract

    -Nutella

    -Star Anise

And if you do make our Salted Caramel Dark Chocolate Pretzel Milk, please, take a picture and show us! We’d love to see it!
